Intel has decided to purchase Infineon’s wireless operations.
Germany’s Infineon has welcomed the sale, saying it will allow it to focus on its core business, which is making computer chips.
Infineon is selling a unit that makes products for wireless telephones to California’s Intel Corp.
The $1.4 billion cash deal will allow Intel to gather technology that will be used in Intel Core processor-based laptops and other devices, including smartphones, netbooks and tablet computers.
