Islamic countries to help Darfur with cash
    Venezuela Star
    Monday 22nd March, 2010

Islamic groups have raised $850 million to help reconstruct villages and help displaced people in Darfur.

The International Donor Conference for the Development and Construction of Darfur in Cairo has been told that $850 million has been raised in pledges from 57 Islamic Conference states as well as dozens of other countries and aid agencies.

The projects will be aimed resettling 2.7 million displaced people who were part of a conflict which is still not resolved

In recent weeks, two main rebel groups have signed cease-fire agreements with the Sudanese government.

The Arab League Secretary General, Amr Moussa, told the conference members that their political efforts would have to be linked to developmental strategies, so a combined approach could help guarantee settling conflicts, especially the ones with poverty as a source.

Darfur rebels rose up against the central government in 2003 after years of being marginalized.
